The Televue Nagler range of astronomical oculars (eyepieces) has, since they were introduced in 1982, become the standard by which most others are judged, having excellent optics and an 82-degree field of view (FOV). Televue was founded and these eyepieces were designed by Al Nagler, of great fame in the amateur astronomical community, for both his eyepieces and his scopes (e.g., NP101, NP127). These eyepieces are bigger than they look, with the 17mm (on far left in above picture) standing nearly 6" tall. The weight of these eyepieces may be too much for smaller scopes and/or smaller mounts. The original Naglers are now called "Type 1". Many of the classic Naglers are Type II or Type IV. For example, the first two eyepieces in the lineup above are the 17mm Type 4 and the 12mm Type 4 - both incredible eyepieces. The next eyepiece in the photo is a 9mm Type 1. Note that some of these eyepieces can fit into either a 1.25" or 2" barrel. The 4th eyepiece from the left in the picture is a 7mm Type 6 - the latest incarnation of the Naglers. The last two eyepieces on the right of the photo are Nagler zooms. These 3-6mm and 2-4mm zooms are intended for very high power viewing with relatively short focal length scopes. Although zoom lenses are generally not as good as their fixed focal length counterparts, the Nagler zooms have tested out to extremely high standards. Ultimately, the quality required from an eyepiece depends on the quality of your vision! |
